Kloof Road update: Work expected to end by October 2025
However, full rehabilitation of the upper road will take more time.
CapeTalk's Pippa Hudson speaks to Hilton Scholtz, Director of Roads Infrastructure Management at the City of Cape Town.
Listen below:
Kloof Road is one of the access routes that links the City Bowl with the Atlantic Seaboard suburbs of Camps Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay and Sea Point.
Repairs are progressing near the lower end of Kloof Road, close to Nettleton Road. According to Scholtz, completion is expected by October 2025.
These repairs became necessary after a section of the embankment below Nettleton Road in Clifton collapsed in July 2020. Temporary safety measures were put in place in 2021 while long-term stabilisation plans were developed.
The current project includes slope stabilisation using ground anchors, commonly known as soil nails, combined with sprayed concrete to secure the slope. The work also involves reshaping the area and improving drainage systems to help prevent future erosion.
In the upper parts of Kloof Road, between Kloof Nek Road and the Roundhouse, recent winter storms and heavy rains have caused significant damage. Repairs have not yet begun.
The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate is actively working through the required statutory processes, including environmental and other approvals, to get the upper section’s repairs underway.
Scholtz says that a contractor is expected to be appointed later this year, with construction to follow soon after.
"Road stabilisation is very tricky and technical... There are only a few contractors who do this work."
