African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has again warned that the party is facing an existential crisis in another honest account about the loss of its national majority, declining public trust, corruption and factionalism.

Mbalula called party members to order during a branch general meeting in Liliesleaf in Rivonia on Sunday.

He said a failure to follow through on calls for party renewal would give opposition parties an edge, sinking the ANC further.

"We are facing an existential crisis and the fundamental question is: what do we do about it? And that is what is facing our leadership – not just nationally, even here. You should be telling us here, 'we should be going this direction, not this direction.'"

Mbalula said the party could not afford to be preoccupied with what other parties were doing, especially in the race for office in Johannesburg, as parties announce mayoral candidates in one of the most important metros in the country.

"Stop arguing about some MaGogo who is announced, let’s have our own MaGogo. I’m happy now to see the ANC focus, the mayor focus. That mayor position is big."
