CAPE TOWN - The  South African Police Service (SAPS) political killings task team has arrested a former Umzimkhulu municipal manager for the murder of Sindiso Magaqa.

Magaqa, who was an African National Congress (ANC) Councillor in the Umzimkhulu Municipality, was murdered in September 2017.

SAPS spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, said the 55-year-old suspect was re-arrested in Malvern, Durban, on Monday after previously being arrested in 2018.

Mathe said that at the time, the suspect was arrested alongside the late mayor of the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality, a businessman, two former police officers and a hitman.

"The hitman, Sibusiso Ncengwa, was convicted to 25 years imprisonment on 07 July 2025. The former mm is expected to appear before the Umzimkhulu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 29 July 2025."
