JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng portfolio committee on community safety has welcomed the arrest of two suspects believed to be part of a sophisticated firearms trafficking syndicate operating in Gauteng and other provinces.

The suspects were nabbed in Meyersdale on Monday during an intelligence-driven operation led by a multi-disciplinary task team.

Both suspects are currently in custody and face multiple charges, including the illegal possession and trafficking of unlicensed firearms.

It's understood that during the operation, police recovered 30 unlicensed firearms reportedly destined for the Western Cape province.

Preliminary investigations have linked the suspects to a series of crimes committed in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

The provincial portfolio committee on community safety has expressed concern over the role illegal firearms play in high-profile and serial crimes

It's made a notable example of a firearm used in the 2022 murder of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, which was later linked to at least 10 other murder cases across the province.

The committee said the arrest and seizure mark a critical milestone in the fight against organised crime and the illegal arms trade.

In light of this breakthrough, it reiterated its support for the call towards a gun-free South Africa.
