CAPE TOWN - An Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor has been allegedly choked by a security official at the City of Cape Town Civic Centre on Wednesday after refusing to leave a council meeting.

Sub-council 13 councillor, Mzubanzi Dambuza, said that he lost consciousness while being choked by a security official during the meeting.

Dambuza said that police were investigating the incident.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis addressed a full council meeting on Wednesday about the city's infrastructure budget for the 2024/2025 financial year.

Dambuza said that the Speaker asked him to leave the chamber after he raised concerns about being heckled by Democratic Alliance (DA) councillors.

He said that he was accosted by a security officer after he refused to leave.

"One of the officers started choking me from behind because I was under the table holding onto one of the poles, and then started pulling me and choking me."

Dambuza said that he has laid a criminal complaint and police were investigating the matter.

The Good Party has since called for the council Speaker, Felicity Purchase, to step aside, saying that she had consistently failed to act fairly.

The city is yet to respond to EWN's request for a response.
