JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng e-hailing and meter taxi associations are engaging the taxi industry to foster an amicable relationship where the public transport services can coexist.

The South African Meter Taxi and E-hailing Association, alongside the Gauteng E-hailing Services, announced this during a media briefing at the provincial road and transport offices.

The structures provided updates on where the industry was in terms of being formalised.

SAMTEA’s chairperson, Sibongiseni Shange, said that the main concerns taxi leaders had were the absence of measures to regulate and contain the e-hailing industry.

"So, our big brothers, as you call them, we talk with them, we sit with them, they just want to understand how do we contain this operation. How do we share without sacrificing the other mode? How do we co-exist? You will know that our big brothers, they've been there for a long time. And they've been the pillar of the public transport."
