CAPE TOWN - The widow of a cyclist who died after being assaulted with a bottle during a robbery said that police were not doing enough to curb crime in Cape Town.
Veteran cyclist Dennis Hammar was riding through the CBD when he was attacked by someone trying to steal his cellphone.
The 77-year-old was under the bridge near the Artscape on Monday, when someone attacked him with a bottle. He died in hospital on Tuesday.
Dennis' widow, Sharon Hammar, said that her deceased husband was a man of integrity.
"He was humble, he was loyal, he was committed. Everybody he got to meet, he touched every person's heart. I don't know one person who had a bad word to say about him."
Hammar lamented the efforts police were making to prevent crime in the city.
"The police... and really I know JP [Smith] and the mayor and all of them are trying everything, but I don't think they're trying enough."
Hammar said she hopes her husband's legacy inspires people to be kinder to one another.
