CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town said its law enforcement agencies continue to clamp down on crime, as well as drunk driving across the metro.
Over the weekend, the city recorded 81 accidents and arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving.
The city's safety and security directorate said that in the last week, traffic officers recorded more than 50,000 incidents where road users broke the law.
Safety and Security MMC JP Smith said the statistics were a grim reminder of the challenges faced with road safety.
He added that with the current wet weather over the city, odds were that the rate of incidents would remain high.
"Enforcement is a critical cog in this wheel, but safer roads start with greater accountability from road users. I appeal to everyone to share in the responsibility of creating safer walking, driving, and cycling conditions for all by obeying the law and exercising greater care for yourself and others."
