CAPE TOWN - Stellenbosch University said that the process of close contact tracing following the death of second-year theology student, Chris Scheffers, was now complete.

The 19-year-old, from Riebeek West, was found dead inside his room at the Dagbreek Residence over the weekend.

Earlier this week, the university confirmed that Scheffers died of meningococcal meningitis.

The institution said that meningitis was endemic to the Western Cape, where it circulated more commonly during the winter months.

Stellenbosch University said that those who were in close contact with Scheffers prior to his death were provided with preventative medication.

On Tuesday, campus health services issued 204 doses of preventative medication and Stellenbosch Hospital issued 13 doses for community members, while an unknown number of people self-presented at private health facilities.

The institution's Martin Viljoen said that once the medication was taken as a single tablet, bacterial clearance happened after 24 hours.

He said they would remain vigilant across the campus community for anyone who reported worrying symptoms and urged them to seek medical attention.

Viljoen said the university remained immensely saddened by the sudden loss of a vibrant young life, as Scheffers was full of potential and loved by his large network of friends, fellow students and community.
