DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department has vowed that strong action will be taken after video footage shows a learner driving a scholar transport vehicle.

The video was captured by community members in the province’s capital city, Pietermaritzburg.

It appears the designated driver of the vehicle allowed a pupil in uniform without a valid driver's license or permit to take over driving.

“I will make sure that I send this to the Department of Transport, and I will get you fired, you will get fired. You are risking children.”

This concerned resident captured the video as the driver who allowed a child to drive his vehicle fled the confrontation.

All this happened with several school learners on board the minibus taxi.

The Department of Transport has condemned the incident and said it will hold the driver to account.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya spoke on behalf of Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said, "The MEC has mandated our highly efficient team from Road Traffic Inspectorate to local the owner of the minibus taxi that is used by the learner.”

An investigation is underway to determine whether the vehicle is a credited service provider.
