JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed a decision to deny bail for 41-year-old Thabo Theletsane, who has been charged with fraud and impersonating a police official.
Theletsane appeared before the Hatfield Magistrate's Court in Pretoria on Monday and was denied bail after claiming he has seven children and another on the way that he needs to provide for.
Theletsane allegedly impersonated former head of the National Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks), Godfrey Lebeya, and called the businessmen on separate occasions, swindling R50,000 from one of them.
The NPA said evidence revealed that Thelestane has two previous convictions for fraud and forgery from 2020, making him likely to reoffend if released.
"The State argued that the accused is likely to commit another offence since he allegedly committed this offence few days after being released on parole. The matter was then postponed to the 2nd of September for transfer to court 16 at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court."
