JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg has pushed back its regional elective conference, with the event now scheduled to take place between 26 and 28 September.

The conference was originally scheduled for the end of August, but an internal memorandum indicated that the delay was due to an extension of the branch general meetings.

During these meetings, ANC branch members handle all the necessary administrative processes before the elective conference begins.

At this upcoming conference, new ANC regional leaders will be elected to steer the ship in the metro.

Johannesburg ANC leader and executive mayor, Dada Morero, is seeking re-election as the party’s regional chairperson, with Loyiso Masuku challenging him for the position.

While the two are on opposing slates, insiders claim that provincial ANC leaders recently pressured Morero into appointing Masuku as his MMC for finance.

The highly-contested conference will also see Sasabona Manganye vying for another term as regional secretary, although Morero’s close ally and mayoral spokesperson, Chris Vondo, is also in the running for the role.

In an internal memorandum seen by EWN, Manganye attributes the delay in the conference to ongoing branch general meetings.

"This memo serves to inform you that in line with the revised ANC guidelines on BGMS, BBGMS, and regional, provincial and national conferences, the RTT in considering the conference preparatory committee recommendations have resolved in extending the BBGM cutoff date from 15 August 2025 to 1st September 2025 which then amends the roadmap to the regional conference," he wrote.

He said the conference would now only take place at the end of September.
