DURBAN - Over half a billion rand has been set aside to build at least 1,000 permanent homes for KwaZulu-Natal flood victims.

On Thursday, provincial human settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, alongside Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli will conduct an inspection of the site where 1,200 homes are being built in Cornubia, north of Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal suffered a major blow after floods ripped through several areas in 2022 and earlier this year.

The disasters left thousands homeless and destroyed public infrastructure, including roads, bridges, schools and healthcare facilities.

Spokesperson for MEC Duma, Ndabezinhle Sibiya: "Already, there are more than 108 sites that have been cleared to pave way for the construction of the 1,200 houses for the victims of floods. We are looking at about R600 million that will be spent, to ensure that these houses are constructed."

Sibiya said the department had earmarked almost R2 billion for flood-related projects.

"We've managed to save R1.7 billion. That money has been saved and this is on the report that the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma presented before the portfolio committee on human settlements."
