JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is calling for engagements between taxi operators and e-hailers to be publicised for transparency and the involvement of affected commuters.

Gauteng transport MEC condemns shooting of e-hailing drivers at Maponya Mall as 'barbaric act'

The suggestion comes amid tensions as taxi operators are suspected to be behind the attack on e-hailing drivers at Maponya Mall in Soweto this week.

The incident that happened on Tuesday claimed the life of one driver and left two others with gunshot wounds.

On Thursday, the MEC and industry leaders engaged in a closed meeting and resolved that all parties must work together in all malls in the province.

DA Gauteng spokesperson for roads, Nicole van Dyk, said, " Commuters cannot be held hostage by one part of the public transport industry because they feel that ‘business’ is being taken away from them. Competition in any industry is normal, but ongoing fights cannot be the norm."

Van Dyk said such violent acts cannot continue to happen while people are meeting behind closed doors.
