JOHANNESBURG - Mayibuye national convenor Floyd Shivambu has taken his political bid to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) as he sets his sights on the 2026 local government elections.

Shivambu is in Durban on Sunday for the final leg of the consultation process after establishing Mayibuye in June, at a time when he had just been removed as the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s Secretary General.

He’s since also been expelled by the MK Party.

Shivambu confirmed last week that Mayibuye was in the process of being registered even before concluding consultations.

He told volunteers at the Greyville Race Course in eThekwini that it’s not just about forming a political party but a political movement.

“A political movement is different from a political party. They say that lets us respond to all the crises and the lack of activism in all of society. They say that let us constitute a movement that will have unions within it, civil society organisations, must have civic organisations within it, NGOs, community forums, but must also have political parties that must contest elections from 2026 onwards.”
