JOHANNESBURG - Team South Africa wrapped up the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr FISU World University Games in style, ranking 7th overall with 19 medals.

The Games ran until 25 July and hosted over 8,500 student-athletes from around the world, with Team SA’s 110 athletes competing in eight codes: Athletics, Rowing, Swimming, Diving, Archery, Fencing, Tennis, and 3×3 Basketball.

Eyewitness News spoke to Aiden Smith, who made his debut at the FISU World University Games and soared his way to a gold medal in shot put.

“One of the biggest lessons I took from that competition is the importance of composure and belief under pressure. Even when I was sitting in fifth place, I trusted my preparation and stayed focused. That mindset allowed me to deliver my best throw when it mattered most. It reinforced that mental strength is just as crucial as physical ability.”

The Tshwane University of Technology student-athlete made a comeback this year after missing two years of competitive throwing due to injury.

“I struggled with a serious shoulder injury that kept me out for two years. During that time, I turned to God, and that’s what kept me grounded. It gave me clarity. I realised that shot put is my calling and what I was put here to do. Coming back in 2025 after my 2023 injury feels like living out that purpose.”

The thrower was in fifth position and appeared to be out of medal contention until his final throw of 20.25 metres in the men’s shot put final.

“I was sitting fifth with 19.31m, then on my final throw I hit 20.25m to take the win. It was an amazing feeling to come through when it mattered most,” said Smith.

The 20-year-old began throwing during the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly grew passionate about the sport. Since then, he has won several junior competitions and a senior national championship.

“I first got into throwing during COVID, when contact sports weren’t allowed. What started as just trying something new quickly grew into a passion, the more I trained, the more I enjoyed it. Once I began to see real progress, I realised I had the potential to go professional. That’s what’s kept me pushing forward ever since.”

Balancing sport and studies, Smith told Eyewitness News that he is pursuing Retail Business Management at TUT online, which allows him to manage both academics and training.

He further praised the institution for its support, which gives him the necessary time both in the classroom and on the field.

“I have an incredible support structure that keeps me focused. My family has always been there for me, and my dad, especially, has played a huge role in guiding and supporting me through everything. On top of that, my girlfriend has been there for me when it matters most. Together, they give me the strength and balance I need to stay locked in on my goals.”

Earlier this year, Smith was crowned the 2025 national shot-put champion after dethroning two-time Olympian Kyle Blignaut with a throw of 20.31m at the SA Senior Track and Field Championships.

“This year has been incredible, and I’ve achieved everything I set out to. I became the U/23 SA National Record Holder and Winner, Senior SA National Champion, USSA National Champion, and Student World Champion. On top of that, I’ve qualified by points for the Senior World Championships in Tokyo. It’s been a milestone year, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.”

“My biggest career highlight so far is winning the Student World Games. That victory not only gave me my first world title but also provided incredible exposure as a field athlete. It reinforced that all my hard work and dedication are paying off.”
