DURBAN - The eThekwini Metro Municipality has committed to ensuring that houses being built for flood victims are provided with basic services.

While there is still a huge housing backlog in the metro, on Wednesday, the national human settlements department handed over 71 new homes to families recently affected by floods.

Council Speaker Thabani Nyawose promised flood victims that the city would meet government halfway.

"After these houses have been built, we have to put services, water and other services, of which is our responsibility as a city, but we commit ourselves to make sure that the part and the role to be played by the city is played."
