DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government has officially turned Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s grave into a provincial heritage site in honour of his legacy.

Buthelezi was the longest-serving Zulu traditional prime minister, having served Zulu kings Bhekuzulu, Zwelithini, and Misuzulu.

He was also the longest-serving statesman at the time of his passing in 2023.

Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli said government wanted to preserve the prince’s contributions.

"You know, in his journey to help our country to be free as we are free today, he played a pivotal role. We know that he fought for the traditional leadership Amakhosi, he protected the land of the Zulu nation under the Ingonyama Trust Act, he was the first to lead the KwaZulu-Natal government as the chief minister."

He said they also wanted his role of developing parts of KZN to be forever cherished.

"Through his leadership, we saw schools, colleges of education, universities and economic zones, such as KwaSithebe and Amabhodini."

Ntuli added that they wish the site could be granted a status of being a national and world heritage site for tourism purposes.
