Police confiscate AK-47 rifle, pistol, arrest 2 people in Gugulethu

CAPE TOWN - The SAPS national intervention unit have confiscated an AK-47 assault rifle and a nine millimetre pistol at separate locations in Gugulethu.
Police spokesperson, Joseph Swartbooi, said that officers from the unit followed up on information about two suspects in possession of firearms without valid permits on Wednesday.
"The members approached a residence in NY4 and searched the entire premises, which resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, with ammunition hidden underneath a mattress in the living room."
Swartbooi said that an adult man was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition before the officers proceeded to a residence in Great Dutch Street, Gugulethu.
"Upon entering the home, they searched the occupants and confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition hidden underneath a pillow. They detained an adult man for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition."
Swartbooi said the suspects were set to appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court once they'd been charged.
