Bail hearing for Fannie Nkosi to continue

The bail hearing of disgraced police officer Fannie Nkosi will continue on Monday morning in the Pretoria North Magistrates Court.

Nkosi was arrested during a raid at his home earlier in April by the Madlanga Commission task team.

He’s been charged with firearm-related crimes, defeating the ends of justice, and the theft of dockets, which were allegedly found at his home.

Nkosi is one of the key witnesses who testified at the Madlanga Commission in March, where he’s been accused of being the middleman between suspected crime kingpins and top police officers.

When prosecutor Tholoana Sekhonyana told the court last week that the State would only be ready after a week to continue with Nkosi’s bail application, he let out a frustrated chuckle while seated in the dock.

On Monday morning, his lawyers will continue with their rebuttal, addressing allegations made by the State

One of those allegations is that Nkosi stole four original dockets and two copies, with one of the originals found in his Wendy house, having gone missing 10 years ago.

The State believes the suspended sergeant hid dockets to shield suspected criminals and frustrate police investigations.

Nkosi has spent the last week with the general prison population and not in the hospital section after Magistrate Thandi Theledi rescinded an order made by another magistrate, saying that the fact that Nkosi fears for his life is not a reason for him to be detained in the hospital section.
