CAPE TOWN - There’s been a 49% increase in motorists caught on camera disregarding red lights.
The City of Cape Town said speeding has remained a common offence on the city’s roads.
The traffic violations statistics were recorded between July 2024 and June 2025.
MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said officers also arrested more than 2,000 motorists, with 72% for driving under the influence.
"Traffic enforcement is a highly contentious and emotive issue, and the biggest critics are often the biggest culprits. The argument about soft targets is old and frankly disrespectful to anyone who has experienced the tragic consequences that flow from the many transgressions on our roads."
