JOHANNESBURG - The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has welcomed a double life sentence handed down to Phethe Simiao for the rape and murder of six-year-old Amantle Samane.
The Johannesburg High Court delivered the ruling this week, with Judge William Karam noting the brutality of the crime.
The party said the judgment is a critical step towards justice for Amantle’s family and a powerful message in the fight against violence towards women and children.

The party also highlighted that more than 106,000 child rape cases have been reported in the last six financial years, with low arrest and conviction rates showing systemic failures in justice.
ATM spokesperson Zama Ntshona explained: “The ATM urges all South Africans to reflect on the lessons from this tragic incident and to take decisive action against the violence that plagues our nation.
“We must advocate for a comprehensive child safety strategy, build partnerships with NGOs [non-governmental organisations], and develop an inter-sectoral plan to promote the safety of South Africa’s children.”
