CAPE TOWN - Over the past weekend, the City of Cape Town recorded a 79% increase in assault calls.
It said of the 140 assault reports received, 98 were with a weapon.
The city’s public emergency communication centre also noted that domestic violence calls increased, as well as motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith said officers on the ground confiscated six guns and arrested 12 suspects.
"Our enforcement departments brace themselves for payday weekends, as it inevitably means an increase in violence and recklessness. Illicit firearms once again dominated our weekend. While I am glad for the weapons we’re taking off the streets, I am aware that there are many more still in the hands of criminals."
