CAPE TOWN - The Beaufort West council has a new deputy mayor.
Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor October Haarvoor was elected as the town's deputy mayor at a special meeting on Wednesday.
The post was left vacant by former acting deputy mayor, Gina Duimpies, who is now the town's first citizen.
The Karoo town has been undergoing several political changes since the resignation of a DA councillor earlier this year.
An African National Congress (ANC) councillor was briefly elected as mayor but later resigned.
DA provincial leader, Tertuis Simmers, said he hopes the latest political moves will bring stability to the municipality.
"October, alongside newly elected Mayor Gina Duimpies, is now tasked with stabilising Beaufort West and restoring its governmental dignity. We believe October will serve Beaufort West residents with integrity and excellence. We wish him much success."
