DURBAN - The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has slammed an incident where a teacher is accused of assaulting learners at a KwaZulu-Natal school.
This follows a video, which was widely shared on social media, showing the incident at the Dr Joseph Shabalala High School in Ladysmith.
In the video, the teacher can be seen in a standoff with three learners in front of the classroom.
SADTU provincial secretary Nomfundo Caluza said, “It is a very unfortunate incident to happen in our schools. All teachers [know] that corporal punishment or any form of punishment is not permitted in our schools.
“It very unfortunate. We’ve sent our regional secretary to also go to the school and engaged with the teacher so that we can be in a better position to understand this.”
Caluza said teachers need to refrain from such acts.
“We continuously engage with teachers to say why they must not engage in such assault and such actions because they are not allowed by law.”
