JOHANNESBURG - The Temba Magistrate's Court in Hammanskraal has added new charges to the 26-year-old man who allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend and filmed himself confessing.

Twenty-six-year-old Lazarus Antonio was facing charges of murder and attempted murder and now faces an additional charge of contravening a protection order.

On 21 August, it is alleged that Antonio stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Kgaogelo Marota, outside a tavern in Maubane, North West – he later went to stab his current girlfriend.

The murder charge is related to the alleged stabbing and killing of Marota, whose lifeless body he filmed and then later filmed himself confessing to the crime, while the attempted murder charge is related to his alleged stabbing of his current girlfriend, who was attacked on the same night.

On Friday, the Temba Magistrate's Court heard that Marota had opened a protection order against Antonio.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana explains: "However, on 21 August 2025, just 10 days later, the accused allegedly went to Dubai tavern in Maubane Village, where the ex-girlfriend was with a friend, and stabbed her. He then returned to his residence, where he allegedly attempted to kill his current girlfriend."

He will remain in custody until 17 October for further investigations.
