JOHANNESBURG - Five Gauteng traffic wardens are receiving hospital care after being shot during a patrol in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning near a railway station.

Premier Panyaza Lesufi is expected to visit the injured wardens on Monday to convey his support.

According to authorities, the wardens came under fire while conducting a routine patrol along the railway line. They were ambushed by around 12 suspects allegedly armed with high-calibre weapons, including AK-47 rifles and pistols.

The attack left five wardens injured. They were initially taken to a hospital in Daveyton but have since been transferred to a healthcare facility in Alberton, where Lesufi is expected to visit them.

Police in Daveyton have opened a case of attempted murder.

This incident comes amid a rise in violent attacks on law enforcement officials.

In earlier statements, the national police commissioner stressed that officers must respond to armed threats with force proportional to the danger they face.
