JOHANNESBURG - KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be the first witness to appear before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry probing his claims of interference within the criminal justice system.

During a briefing in Pretoria on Monday afternoon, Commission spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels, confirmedconsultations with Mkhwanazi are ongoing this week and will continue into next week.

"We can now confirm that the consultation to which the chairperson of the commission, Justice Madlanga, referred was with Lt General Mkhwanazi, who the commission intends to call as its first witness."

The Commission, chaired by retired ConCourt Judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga, will begin with the public hearings next Wednesday.

The commission was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July, days after mkhwanazi made explosive allegations of corruption and collusion within the criminal justice system.
