CAPE TOWN - The World Health Organisation (WHO) has predicted that by the year 2030, 500 million people will develop disabling hearing loss.
As the globe observes “Deaf Awareness Month” this September, the WHO said that whether acquired or present at birth, hearing loss can severely impact one’s quality of life.
This year's theme focuses on addressing the social, cultural and professional barriers faced daily by the deaf community.
Head of the Audiology Unit at Tygerberg Hospital, Jenny Birkenstock, said early hearing loss detection can reduce the feeling of isolation.
"Over one billion young people face the risk of permanent damage to their hearing due to prolonged exposure to loud sounds during recreational activities such as gaming and listening to music.”
