Police officer holds family hostage in Mamelodi

JOHANNESBURG - A police officer is holding his family hostage in a house in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon. 

Officers said the man, who is armed, has been in the house since 8am on Tuesday morning and has fired shots.

Hostage negotiators and special task force police are on the scene.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brenda Muridili believes the ordeal was caused by a family dispute.

She said the scene remains active.
