JOHANNESBURG – Joburg Mayor Dada Morero said a gathering of mayors from G20 member states this week will chart the way from the ground up as governments across the world scale up on their growth and transformation agendas.

Morero was speaking at a media briefing in Sandton on Tuesday, ahead of the U20 Mayors Summit.

Joburg and Tshwane will co-host mayors from the G20 member states at the end of the week as part of South Africa’s presidency.

He said the policy priorities including climate action, financing and social inclusion drafted by the mayors must shape the final national document taken forward by G20 heads of state.

“The U20 is, therefore, not just about mayors talking or talking to each other, it is about cities claiming their rightful place in shaping the destiny of nations. It is about ensuring that local governance is global governance.”
