This was outlined in a new report highlighting the main human rights violations reported during the past financial year.
The majority of residents in the eThekwini Municipality have lodged complaints with the SAHRC about the metro’s ongoing water crisis.
The commission found that although water is available in some areas, it is often unsafe for drinking or cooking.
Commissioner Tshepo Madlizingozi said in Cape Town, the most reported human rights violation differs significantly from that in eThekwini.
“Complaints on Cape Town relate to housing. That is the most complaint we have received. Of course, there are other issues if security, gang violence and sanitation, but housing is the biggest one.”
Cape Town and eThekwini are joined by Rustenburg and Polokwane as the municipalities with the highest number of complaints from residents.
