JOHANNESBURG - City Power is warning the public against climbing electric towers to conduct illegal connections.
The warning follows the arrest of two people who were seen in a viral video at the top of the utility's electric poles, appearing to steal power.
One of the suspects is a City Power employee.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said they’d noted with regret the increased number of its own employees often involved in these illegal connections.
Mangena said that disciplinary action would be taken against the employee.
"We don't want people that are supposed to work for the community but they are working against the community, they're working against City Power and they are the ones who are basically instigating and stealing money from City Power. We have been arresting and we have in the past acknowledged that we don't rule out the involvement of our staff members in some of the vandalism and theft and illegal connections that are happening in the townships and elsewhere in the City of Johannesburg."
