DURBAN - The Jafta Commission of Inquiry has heard evidence from a former Walter Sisulu University’s head of security on Thursday, Sibusiso Ngubane.
The commission is probing the injury and murder of students at the institution in the Eastern Cape.
Earlier this year, a student was shot and killed while another one sustained injuries on campus.
Ngubane’s company, Myaluza Security, which has since been removed from the institution, was in charge of security when the incidents occurred.
The commission sat in Umhlanga, Durban for Thursday’s witness.
In February this year, medical student, Sethu Ndamase, was shot during a student demonstration. She was badly injured and is still in a critical condition.
A month later, another student, Sisonke Mbolekwa, was shot and killed on campus while protesting over poor living conditions in student residences.
The institution’s residence manager, Manelisi Mampane, is charged with Mbolekwa’s murder.
The commission is probing the circumstances surrounding both incidents.
Ngubane testified about some of the issues his security encountered at the institution, including a firearm, which he said he learnt was kept illegally there.
Proceedings have been adjourned to Friday.
