JOHANNESBURG - In a first for the province in several years, the Eastern Cape government has recorded improvements for financial management, compliance and accountability across departments and public entities.
The positive outcome was revealed in the 2024/25 audit report conducted by South Africa’s auditor-general.
The report highlights improved performance, particularly by the province’s embattled health and education departments.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane hailed the 2024/25 audit outcomes, saying it's encouraging news for the province’s efforts to clean up shop.
Both the health and education departments, which have historically struggled and received qualified audit opinions, have now achieved unqualified financial outcomes.
Mabuyane added that this marked a positive step for the two critical service-delivery departments that impact the daily lives of millions of residents.
The audit report also highlighted a group of departments that have retained their clean audit status.
They include the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department, Rural Development Department and the provincial treasury.
The premier has, however, admitted that significant challenges remain in the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex and the provincial Rural Development Agency, which both received qualified audit outcomes.
He’s committed to prioritising them for corrective support.
