JOHANNESBURG - The South African Under-17 national team, Amajimbos, will get their CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations 2026 | COSAFA qualifying campaign underway on Friday when they face Zambia at the Ngoni Mwos Stadium in Zimbabwe.

From 11–20 September, 12 teams will battle not only for regional bragging rights but also for coveted spots at the continental finals next year. With only the three group winners and the best runner-up advancing to the semifinals, every game will carry knockout intensity.

South Africa is in Group B with Madagascar, Malawi, and Zambia. Zambia is the defending champion and the most successful team in COSAFA U17 history with four titles, while South Africa has reached eight finals, winning three.

Coach Vela Khumalo said: "We are looking forward to playing our first game against Zambia, which is going to be a little bit tough for us. But we are ready for Zambia and we hope that we are going to give a good account of ourselves. We have motivated the boys, the technical team is ready to go, and everyone is in a good space. We are looking forward to getting positive results."

The regional tournament will serve as the qualifying platform for the CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations 2026, with only the top two teams securing a place in the continental finals.

Khumalo added that the team will be looking to make a strong statement as they aim for qualification and continue the legacy of South African youth football on the continental stage.
