CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town is calling on residents to comment on the proposed compulsory heavy vehicle stop on Kloof Nek Road.

The proposal was made after an increase in accidents involving heavy vehicles on Kloof Nek Road.

If approved, there will be heavy vehicle lane with a compulsory stop, approximately 150 meters downhill from the pedestrian signal at Tafelberg Road.

Earlier in 2025, a collision on the road between a minibus taxi, a truck, and a sedan left four people injured.

MMC for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, said the aim is to implement the most effective measures to improve safety along the busy access route.

“The proposal includes a dedicated heavy vehicle lane, approximately 250 meters long, with clear signage and road markings. Heavy vehicles would be required to stop, engage road gear and remain in road gear for the rest of the downhill section.”

Quintas added that the city’s Public Participation Unit will assist those who cannot read or write, live with disabilities or who are from disadvantaged groups and unable to submit written comments.

"Residents are invited to comment between the 15th of September and the 16th of October and to attend an information session on the 17th of September from 3 pm to 6 pm at the Good Hope council chambers at 44 Wale Street."
