CAPE TOWN - Cape Town is stepping up its response to community safety concerns by deploying 700 new metro police officers across the city.
Mfuleni has been allocated 380 square metres of office space within the local municipal building to house the South African Police Service (SAPS).
This comes amid growing frustration from residents, who say the Blue Downs Police Station can't adequately serve surrounding communities.
Mitchells Plain community police forum chairperson Norman Jantjes said parts of the area are hotspots for illegal activity.
“So, gang violence is one of the priorities that they need to look at, as well as the whole thing about illegal firearms within our community, vandalism, the focusing on the bylaws of the city, and there's illegal shebeens, spaza, shops, drug outlets.”
