HOWICK - The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal is calling for a state security task team to solely focus on crime intelligence.

The party said this was crucial, considering the political violence experienced in parts of the country, especially in KwaZulu-Natal over the years.

The party's KZN leaders attended the court case of slain DA councillor, Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, in Howick on Monday.

Ndlovu was killed at his Empophomeni homestead in Howick in December 2023.

While a political task team focusing on political violence was established back in 2018, the DA in KZN says its not enough.

The party has cited various issues when it comes to crime intelligence in the country.

DA KZN provincial leader, Francois Rodgers, said that going to the 2026 local government polls, intelligence will have to be strengthened.

"This is where it is so important that you have a state security task team that is able to pick up intelligence on the ground, particularly as you say, going into the local government election. It’s critical."

At the same time, the party says a lot still has been achieved in a bid to curb political violence.
