The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape has labelled the Democratic Alliance (DA) government's decision to dissolve the Knysna Municipality as a political witch-hunt.
The DA-led government has decided to put the municipality under administration due to service delivery failures.
Earlier this year, Local Government MEC Anton Bredell cited governance failures, an organisational culture of fear and political interference in the administration, among other issues.
An administrator will take over the running of the Garden Route town, until fresh elections are held within 90 days.
The Knysna Municipality, governed by a coalition of the African National Congress (ANC), the Patriotic Alliance and the Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners, has made headlines for failing to provide services to its people.
It's also faced allegations of corruption and political instability.
However, the ANC's tripartite alliance partner, the SACP, suggests that the situation has improved over the past twelve months.
The communist party says the DA's intervention is unjustified and politically opportunistic.
The party adds that the decision is not motivated by genuine concerns for service delivery, but by the DA's refusal to accept the outcomes of democratic elections in Knysna.
