KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has told the Madlanga Inquiry that the arrests of two suspected kingpins, Katiso Molefe and Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, were made with the help of the province’s political killings task team.
Mkhwanazi testified on day one of the Madlanga Inquiry, which is probing interference in the criminal justice system.
He told the commission that members from the KZN team formed what was now known as the "Gauteng Counter-Intelligence".
Molefe and Matlala have been charged with separate crimes, including the murder of Vereeniging engineer, Armand Swart, and the kidnapping of Pretoria businessman, Jerry Boshoga, who is still missing.
Mkhwanazi testified that the operation is ongoing.
"The very same Gauteng counter-intelligence operation is the one that led to the arrest of Mr Molefe. Again, it's the one that led to the arrest of Mr Matlala. It's a team that today, as we sit here, has been part of the opposing of the bail of Mr Matlala, which was denied by the court today."
