JOHANNESBURG - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has laid criminal charges against Operation Dudula for allegedly causing the death of a sick child by blocking his mother from accessing a clinic.

Earlier this week, Newzroom Afrika reported on Malawian national, Grace Banda, who said that members from Operation Dudula prevented her from getting medical assistance for her one-year-old child at Alexandra clinic.

The child later died however the political organisation has since denied it instructed its members to block access to the clinic.

However, over the past weeks, Dudula members have been barricading the gates of public healthcare clinics and preventing what they call “undocumented foreigners” from accessing the facilities.

Speaking outside the Alexandra Police Station, EFF Gauteng Leader, Nkululeko Dunga said that Operation Dudula is operating like a vigilante group.

"Everyone, in accordance to them who does not come to these facilities without some sort of identification is perceived to be of illegal immigration. So they are taking us back to an era where we have fought off, apartheid and dom pass laws, where South Africans must walk around with identification just to prove that indeed they are South Africans."
