The Western Cape Department of Social Development says its tackling an increase in gang-related incidents involving minors in the province with targeted programmes.

Less than a week ago, a 14-year-old boy was shot in the head multiple times in a suspected gang-related incident in Elsies River.

Since Sunday, police have arrested two minors for illegal possession of guns in Manenberg and Hanover Park.

The department admits there has been a disturbing increase in gang-related incidents involving minors in the province recently.

Chairperson of the provincial standing committee on social development, Wendy Kaizer-Philander, said children were being recruited by gangs because they were desperate for belonging and survival.

Kaizer-Philander said the provincial department was tackling the issue with targeted programmes.

"Like the 76 funded after-school care centres, providing the youth with safe spaces and mentorship. Over 14,000 young people were enrolled in skills development programmes, equipping them with the tools they need to build a future outside of gang life."

Kaizer-Philander said the department had also provided 12 youth cafes in gang hotspot areas, which offered alternatives to gangsterism.
