National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said he doesn’t believe Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s claim that President Cyril Ramaphosa approved the disbandment of the political killings task team.
Masemola told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday that Mchunu had claimed the president had no objection to the unit’s dissolution.
The bid to dissolve the task team is at the centre of allegations of political interference in police work, with claims that Mchunu sought to protect certain criminal syndicates.
Masemola said he remains unconvinced by Mchunu’s assertion that the president supported the unit’s disbandment.
"When I briefed the president on the 1st of February 2025, he was quite taken aback that this team is being disbanded with no reasons given. He was taken aback and he said he would speak to the minister."
