Police Minister Senzo Mchunu raised the alarm on the R360 million police tender awarded to alleged underworld figure, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.
National police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, confirmed this to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday afternoon during his testimony.
Masemola indicated that as early as December last year, Mchunu instructed police management to investigate the tender awarded to Matlala’s company, Medicare24 Tshwane District, regarding an SAPS health risk management contract.
During a meeting on 24 December last year, Mchunu tasked police top brass to investigate a R360 million SAPS health risk management contract awarded to controversial tenderprenuer and alleged underworld figure, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.
Testifying at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria, Masemola confirmed that during the meeting, reports of general non-performance were raised and they were tasked to probe the contract.
"Minister Mchunu instructed that we look into the contract. During that process, we discovered corruption, fraud and a failure of delivery of service, resulting in the cancelling of the contract on 13 of May 2025."
Masemola conceded this was positive action on the part of Mchunu.
