Residents from Thokoza township and Alrode North in Ekurhuleni have been left in the dark after the Bosworth substation caught fire.
On Tuesday night, disaster management teams responded to calls of towering flames seen from a distance outside Alberton.
Upon arrival, the fire teams found the substation's electrical panel building fully engulfed, with sections of the roof having already collapsed.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident may have been triggered by a power surge following a local outage.
Disaster management spokesperson William Ntladi said no casualties were reported.
"Teams had to wait for the all-clear signal from an electrician on scene before commencing with the fire suppression. It is alleged that an electrical surge might have caused the fire; however, that is still a subject of an investigation."
