On Tuesday, the uMzimkhulu Magistrate's Court denied bail to Stanley Sikhosana. The former uMzimkhulu municipal manager is accused of ordering Magaqa’s killing in 2017.
September marks exactly eight years since Magaqa was killed, and his family said they still have not been able to close the painful chapter. While one of the hitmen, Sibusiso Ncengwa, has pleaded guilty and was sentenced, the family hopes the three other accused will suffer the same fate.
Sikhosana, former police officer Sbonelo Myeza, and businessman Mbulelo Mpofana will stand trial in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on 6 October.
Sindiso’s brother, Lwazi Magaqa, said: "We are hoping that as he is lying there in the grave—he's not alone; he is working tirelessly in order for all those who did this mess to be apprehended and brought forward to the court."
The prosecution said it will put its best case forward in the matter.
