Johannesburg Water is sounding the alarm over reports of individuals illegally selling water from its tankers, urging residents not to buy water.

The utility is reminding the public that water distributed through its water trucks during outages is free of charge.

It said the sale of water goes against its commitment to providing free alternative supply.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over opportunistic individuals exploiting water outages by charging desperate residents for what should be a public service.

Johannesburg Water is urging the public to be vigilant and report any incidents by gathering details including the time and date, location, truck registration, photos or videos as evidence and a detailed written statement.

It says the reports can be lodged to the Johannesburg Water contact centre or anonymously through anti-corruption channels.

It has also urged residents to escalate the matter to their local ward councillors.
