Kwazulu-Natal’s Department of Transport is set to announce urgent safety interventions for scholar transport following a series of recent tragedies that claimed the lives of five learners.
Transport MEC Sboniso Duma is expected to outline the department’s response during a media briefing at the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.

Planned interventions include stricter regulations for vehicles transporting learners, increased law enforcement visibility on school routes, and targeted roadworthiness inspections.
"The MEC has invited members of the fourth estate to a media briefing that will reflect on strengthening of law enforcement to deal with the violation of the National Road Traffic Act," said spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya.
"The MEC has also indicated that in the media briefing, he will outline interventions on scholar transport following accidents that resulted in the death of five learners in Pietermaritzburg."
