KwaZulu-Natal Director for Public Prosecutions (DPP) Elaine Harrison said uncertainty surrounding the disbandment of the provincial political killings task team (PKTT) disrupted her planning for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) annual operations.

Harrison had deployed a group of prosecutors to work alongside the task team to ensure investigations were prosecution-led.

However, Harrison told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Friday morning that she was never formally informed of Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu’s decision to dissolve the team.

She said the confusion over the unit’s existence negatively affected the NPA’s work.

“We all know how bad the issue of organised crime is. If you read on any media platform, you’ll always find articles about organised crime, and the NPA has got its own strategies and action plan of how to we need to deal with the work.

“I found myself not being able to finalise the annual operation plan because there was no finality about the existence of the KZN political killings task team, which would then have an impact on the KZN NPA plan.”
